FAQS for Salawat Success
Now that you’ve made the intention to make Salawat a regular part of your life (Masha’Allah / high-five!), it’s important to be aware of the required etiquette and recommendations for proper execution, acceptance and maximal reward.
HOW SHOULD I RECITE SALAWAT?
Prepare your heart and intention:
- Ensure sincerity in your heart
- Express your genuine love for Allah (SWT) and His Holy Messenger ﷺ
- Be grateful for the mental, physical and spiritual ability to be able to recite Salawat
- Embody humility and respect as a Muslim and slave of Allah (SWT) and follower of His Beloved Prophet ﷺ
- Put worldly tasks on hold during this time and dedicate your focus to your recitation
Prepare your body & physical state of being:
- Ideally, being in a state of wudhu (ritual purification) - this is highly preferable while reciting Salawat
- Use a miswak / ensure oral hygiene
- Wear clean, fresh clothing which covers your body appropriately and is free from impurities
- Reciting your Salawat while seated, as you would during Salah, is preferable
- Consider applying a light, pleasant-smelling itr or essence to perfume your body
Prepare your surroundings:
- Recite your Salawat in a clean, quiet surrounding where possible
- If possible, use a pleasant-smelling fragrance or essence to perfume the area
- Positioning yourself towards Madina (approximately 90 degrees to the right of the qiblah) is preferable
